Southern Circuit Destinations

The Southern Circuit Tour in Tanzania is a safari route that explores the less crowded, remote, and highly natural national parks located in the southern part of the country. Unlike the busy Northern Circuit (Serengeti and Ngorongoro), the Southern Circuit offers a more authentic wilderness experience with fewer tourists and vast untouched landscapes.

It is known for its raw nature, large wildlife populations, and diverse safari activities such as game drives, walking safaris, boat safaris, and hiking. The main parks in this circuit include Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve), Ruaha National Park, Mikumi National Park, and Udzungwa Mountains National Park, each offering unique scenery and wildlife experiences.

Nyerere National Park

Nyerere National Park (formerly known as Selous Game Reserve) is one of the largest protected wildlife areas in Africa, located in southern Tanzania. It was renamed in honor of Tanzania’s first president, Julius Nyerere, and is part of the larger Selous ecosystem.

The park is famous for its vast wilderness, offering a more remote and less crowded safari experience compared to northern parks. It features diverse landscapes including savannahs, woodlands, wetlands, and the mighty Rufiji River, which is the lifeline of the ecosystem.

Nyerere National Park is home to a wide range of wildlife such as elephants, lions, hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, leopards, and wild dogs—one of the best places in Africa to see African wild dogs in the wild.

One of its unique highlights is the boat safari along the Rufiji River, where visitors can see hippos, crocodiles, and numerous bird species up close. Game drives and walking safaris are also popular activities, offering a true wilderness adventure.

Because of its size, biodiversity, and low tourist density, Nyerere National Park is ideal for travelers seeking an authentic and untouched safari experience in Tanzania.

Ruaha National Park

Ruaha National Park is the largest national park in Tanzania and one of the most remote and untouched safari destinations in Africa. It is located in the southern safari circuit and forms part of a vast wilderness ecosystem that supports an incredible diversity of wildlife.

The park is known for its rugged landscapes, featuring vast savannahs, rocky hills, baobab trees, and the life-giving Great Ruaha River. This river attracts large concentrations of animals, especially during the dry season.

Ruaha is famous for its high density of elephants and predators. Visitors can see lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, wild dogs, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, and many antelope species. It is one of the best places in East Africa to observe lions in large prides and active hunting behavior.

Birdlife is also exceptional, with over 570 recorded species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.

Due to its remoteness and low visitor numbers, Ruaha National Park offers a true wilderness safari experience with fewer crowds and a strong sense of isolation, ideal for travelers seeking raw and authentic African nature.

The park features vast savannah landscapes framed by the Uluguru Mountains and is home to a variety of animals including elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, buffaloes, hippos, and crocodiles. Predators such as lions and hyenas are also commonly seen, especially around the Mkata floodplain.

Mikumi is particularly popular for short safaris due to its proximity to major cities and good road access. It offers excellent game viewing throughout the year, especially during the dry season when animals gather around water sources.

Unlike typical savannah parks, Udzungwa is a rainforest park dominated by dense tropical forests, waterfalls, mountains, and hiking trails. It is often called the “Galápagos of Africa” due to its high number of endemic species found nowhere else in the world.

The park is famous for hiking and trekking adventures, especially the popular trail to Sanje Waterfalls, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Tanzania. From the top, visitors enjoy breathtaking views of the Kilombero Valley and surrounding forests.

Udzungwa is home to unique wildlife such as the Udzungwa red colobus monkey, Sanje crested mangabey, elephants, antelopes, and many bird species. It is also a paradise for birdwatchers and nature researchers.

This park is ideal for travelers seeking adventure, trekking, rainforest exploration, and a different kind of safari experience beyond traditional game drives.
